The modern air combat arena has changed considerably in recent years. Today, sophisticated radar and high-off-boresight (HOBS) missiles able to outmaneuver your opponent are not guarantees of air combat superiority. The ability to obtain lock with the weapons system, fire, and egress quickly is of paramount importance.

In all phases of the mission, the pilot's situational awareness is crucial for success. To achieve optimal situational awareness, the following are necessary: display of flight instruments data, display of 3D map and location information, and display of sensor and weapons information. The ability to designate targets and threats by slaving sensors and weapons to the pilot's line-of-sight can make the difference in mission success.

The latest fighter aircraft are equipped with helmet mounted systems. Existing fighter aircraft have been upgraded with the same helmets to enhance their performance capabilities in the modern combat arena.
