- Current FAA and EASA regulations offer EFVS equipped operators a lower landing credit. The regulations simply state when a pilot on an instrument approach reaches decision height and has the runway environment in sight using a certified enhanced vision system, the pilot may continue down to 100 ft. above touch down elevation. At this point, natural vision of the runway environment will allow the pilot to proceed with landing.
- In the U.S., EFVS provides an aircraft operator with RVR minimums of 1000 ft. or 1/4 mile reported at any airport to attempt an approach. In Europe, EFVS provides an aircraft operator with a 1/3 reduction in RVR minimums required to attempt an approach.
- EFVS provides the ability to taxi to and from the terminal in low visibility conditions and is recognized by the FAA as a surface movement guidance and control (SMGCS) operational tool.
- EFVS offers unparalleled operational flexibility. An EFVS equipped aircraft increases access, efficiency, and throughput at many airports when low visibility is a factor. With EFVS, a pilot is now able to realize CAT I and CAT II like benefits while no longer relying on ground infrastructure. This opens multiple runway ends at congested airports and creates greater flexibility in departure and destination choices.
- EFVS can reduce operational costs. A reduction in weather related delays provides an operator with the potential for substantial fuel savings. This savings is realized by fewer in flight delays, fewer missed approaches, fewer flights forced to an alternate destination, and a decrease or elimination in hold times. Other savings come from a reduction in resources for down line delays, cancelled or delayed passenger rescheduling, a reduction in pilot and flight attendant hourly costs, a reduction in airframe and engine time per flight, and reduced recurring training and maintenance costs.
- EFVS can allow a company to better meet their customer needs by increasing potential route structures and city pairs serviced. Fewer delays lead to an increase in on-time performance and provide a significant marketing opportunity of this competitive advantage.
- Fewer missed approaches and the elimination of hold times equal a reduction of carbon emissions and an opportunity to capitalize on “green.” An operator can now leverage their investment in enhanced vision technology as evidence of concern for the safety of their customers and the environment.
